Syracuse vs Pittsburgh – College Basketball Free Pick
Saturday, February 2, 2013
Syracuse travels to Pittsburgh Saturday, February 2nd, 2013. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 12:00 pm est on ESPN. The oddsmakers have made Pittsburgh a 3 point favorite in this huge Big East showdown.
Syracuse’s overall record is 18-2, Big East record is 6-1, ATS overall is 10-6, ATS home is 6-3, and ATS away is 3-2.
Syracuse was upset in their last outing by Villanova and is still without the services of James Southerland.
Syracuse does not play away from their place too often, except for conference games. In fact, before those games started, they only went on the road twice to San Diego State (which was a neutral site) and Arkansas. They will be without their sixth man 6’-8” James Southerland for at leats two more games because of violating team rules.
In addition, DaJuan Coleman who was their freshman starting center will be out at least one month with an injured knee. Jerami Grant, a 6’-8” freshman big man from DeMatha Catholic High School who had been filling in for James Southerland, will now get even more playing time. Up till now, he has played quite admirably. But, any college team that loses two of their most important big men is going to be in trouble, and Syracuse will be no different.
Even though Syracuse is rated 6th in the nation, this one is going to be tough. They are going on the road and playing in front of a packed house without two of their best big men, against a team that has a very solid inside. It is going to be really difficult for them coming out this game with a win but if their defense plays solid they can.
Pittsburgh’s overall record is 17-5, Big East record is 5-4, ATS overall is 7-8, ATS home is 2-5, and ATS away is 3-2.
This is a very good game that either team could win. Pittsburgh is at home for this one. They have an on campus arena that they usually pack with over 12,000 spectators, and you can be sure that it will be sold out for Syracuse.
Pittsburgh won four conference games in a row before they dropped a close one on the road to Louisville, 64 to 61.
Pittsburgh has lost 5 games this year. On the road they lost to Michigan, Rutgers, and Louisville. At home they lost to Cincinnati and Marquette. Michigan is rated #1, Louisville is #12, Cincinnati is #24, and Marquette is #25.
In reality, this team has not had a bad loss this year. After all, if you are only losing to the best teams in the nation, that’s not so bad. A loss to a conference opponent on the road is not considered a bad loss.
Their best wins have been over Georgetown and Villanova. Both of those teams are playing pretty good right now. Against Louisville, Pittsburgh’s two post players Steven Adams had 8 points and 7 boards, and Talib Zanna had 4 points and 10 rebounds.
These two guys are getting better, and Louisville’s inside players are some of the best in the nation. One would think that against a depleted Syracuse inside, these two guys should have real good games.
Under Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh has always been known as a real good defensive tough minded team, and this year’s bunch is no different. If they only could find a little bit of scoring some place, they could go a long way in the NCAA tournament.
I am going to back Pittsburgh in this one minus the points as our ratings gave Pitt -4 in this one and computer is calling for a 6 point win. Pittsburgh falls into a 86-34, 71.7% positive home momentum situation of our if not favored by more than 4 points. With Syracuse off a tough road loss to Nova in their last game, we look for Pitt to have motivation to get this one done in front of a big home crowd.
